Navigation Menus

What is Navigation?

Navigation is a menu that links to your website pages, a PDF document, or other web pages. Depending on your website template, your site can have menus in various places.

To access your site's navigation:
  • Go to Website / Navigation.
  • Drag menu entries up or down to organize the placement in the list.
  • Use the check boxes to Enable or Disable the menu entries. This determines whether or not the menu tab will be visible. You can choose to enable/disable for the website and the mobile app.
  • Be sure to Save at the bottom of the page each time so they will "stay in place."

Change Menu

You can create multiple navigation menus on your site to be displayed in different places. Each Menu can be customized to show a specific set of Menu Entries.

The default is usually set to the Main Menu. This is the menu that is usually shown on your home page.

Important! - Do NOT delete your Main Menu.

To create a new menu:
  1. Select the "add new menu" button at the top.
  2. Enter a Menu Name (internal) and a Title (Public.)
  3. Once you Save, your Menu will be created and you can begin adding Menu Entries and links to the specific pages you wish to include in that Menu.

Creating A New Menu Entry

Navigation controls the menus on your website.  A Menu Entry is the link in your navigation menu to a new content page. You must create a Menu Entry in order to add something to the navigation bar on the home page.

To Create a New Menu Entry:

1. Go to Website / Navigation.
2. Select the Menu you wish to add the Menu Entry to by using the "Change menu" drop down box. (The Main Menu is where most of your Menu Entries will go.)
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select "Add New Menu Entry."

4. Create the New Menu Entry.
  • Label:  The title for the menu entry. It will be what the user sees.
  • Destination: The destination tells the menu entry where to go. You can have it point to a page that you have created or to a URL.
  • Who can see this item?:  Choose who you want to be able to view the menu entry. If you want only logged in users to your site to see it, switch this to "yes, only logged in users can see it". If this control is in place, this menu item will not be visible to visitors to your site. For more details, see the article on Menu Entry Options.
  • Open in New Window?:  If you select "Yes," then a new browser window will open up for your user before taking them to that link.
  • Extra CSS:  if you don't know what this is, probably best to leave it blank!!

The system will automatically take you back to the Navigation Tab. If you scroll down to the bottom of the list, you should see the new menu entry you created.
  • You can drag it around to place it where you'd like it to go in the navigation.
  • In order for it to be visible to users, you MUST check the "Enabled" box next to the menu entry. This allows you to turn on/off menu as they are needed to avoid creating new entries each time.
  • You can edit a Menu Entry by selecting the blue "edit" button next to it.
  • VERY IMPORTANT! You MUST SAVE after each time you reorder or enable a menu entry.

There are sometimes issues with drag and drop in Chrome. If you are using Chrome and are having difficulty, we recommend trying another browser. Otherwise, submit a help desk ticket so we can assist you.

Turning Off a Menu Entry

If you have a Menu Entry in your navigation that should not be currently active, you can disable it. This is much easier than deleting the Menu Entry and allows you to add it back in at a future time.

To Disable the Menu Entry:
  • Select the box in the column "Enabled" that is associated with the Menu Entry you'd like to turn off. You can enable/disable menu entries for both your website and the mobile app.
  • In this example we are turning off the "Field Day" Menu Entry and it will no longer appear as a choice in the website navigation.

If you have too many menu items, your navigation menu will "wrap" to the next row. To change the font size for the menu entries so they will fit in one row, see our article on How to Add Custom CSS to Control the Navigation Font Size.

Menu Entry Destination

The Menu Entry Destination tells the Menu Entry where to go. You can have it point to a page that you have created or to a URL.

There are 5 categories for Menu Links:

1. Standard Options
These are preset pages in your Membership Toolkit account.

2. Volunteer Groupings
Directs users to one of your Volunteer sign-up forms.

3. Blogs
Directs users to a blog on your site.

4. Pages
These are content pages that you have created in your Membership Toolkit account.

5. Specific URL
Directs users a new URL.

To select a page from within your site:
  • Select the up/down arrow and a list of all your page titles will be shown.
  • Choose the page that you want to link your menu entry to.

If you want to assign the menu entry to a different website:
  • Open the website in a new window.
  • Copy the URL from your browser into the space after "Specific URL".

Connecting a Menu Entry to a PDF
  • When you upload a PDF to your Membership Toolkit account, a URL is created for the PDF. This URL can become the destination for a Menu Entry.
  • Use the drop down menu to select "Pick a file..."

  • The File Manager will automatically open so you can select the PDF you want to link to.

  • When you click the "Insert" button, the URL will auto-populate into the Destination field, and the label will change to "Specific URL."
